PROJECTS: The Hinterland: sertao_17-20151115sertao0974

Campo Alegre de Lourdes, Brazil. Saturday, Nov. 14, 2015.
A farming family collects water from a nearby water pond that will be used for cooking and washing. The pond has a milky color because of the minerals in the soil. Usually, subsistence farmers do not use the same pond water as the animals do but the drought— the worst in 50 years — has caused drastic water shortages and food insecurity.
Historically the region has the single largest concentration of rural poverty in Latin America, with nearly 35% percent of families living in extreme poverty, according to the International Fund for Agricultural Development.
